Image Essay #4

This image of Rei from Neon Genesis Evangelion makes good use of symmetry, both symmetrical and asymmetrical. It's symmetrical in two ways. Rei herself is vertically symmetrical, and her reflection in the water also makes the image horizontally symmetrical. But there is also some asymmetrical elements. The way the loose feathers are positioned make the image a little asymmetrical. So the image would probably also be a good example of Gestalt. Rei is also the focal point of the image. But when one looks down at her reflection it takes the viewer off the page. If ones breaks down Rei into geometric shapes, then one would get, circles, triangles, and rectangles. The triangles are the most dominate shape because there are more of them than circles and rectangle's. Shading is used to make Rei look more three-dimensional. There is also a large value contrast. There is a lot more light than dark, which causes Rei and the moon to pop out more.
