The composition above is a page from the doujinshi, Ten Years of Death by Anna Matheis(also known as Ore-sama). If you don't know, a doujinshi is a fan made manga. The way black is used really brings out the angst the character is feeling on the page and the faces of the character outlined in white, along with the way they juxtaposed with the character in the middle really add to it. It kind of makes the reader feel sad for the character. The artist used a little bit a shading and noise to make the characters look a little more three-dimensional, thought in the bottom panel the characters, including the shaded one look a little more two-dimensional. It also kind of look like that all of the images are within a curvilinear shape. The noise in the corner which probably represents that the image is a memory, kind of gives it that look. The value contrast of the noise going from black to gray to white kind of give off the effect that the image is a memory. There doesn't seem to be very many differences in line density. Though that kind of thing is sometimes common in comics.
